Cool Capture: Morning Stretch

Another one of my Instagram photos was chosen through GeekSugar's Cool Capture group. I love this one because it's of Lamont. I think he's homeless, although I can't be totally certain. Clancy and I walk 1 1/2 blocks most week mornings and see Lamont working out, stretching or praying in this same spot each week along the park/cliffs in Santa Monica.

We are on first name basis at this point and he always welcomes us with a wave, a smile and a warm hello.

Instagram Project- One Year of #samephotodifferentday_mollyisfast

Over the course of the past year, and inspired by my friend Ines, I've taken a photo from the same spot on a 119 different occasions over the past 365 (or is it 364?) days. February 10th was the one-year anniversary from when I first started this series. And while it's not over by a long shot, I wanted to take this opportunity to compile and showcase this labor of love.

What you see above is a nearly two minute long slideshow of these photos all together. Taken on different days. At different times. All from the same spot. It's fascinating to see how much the weather actually does (sort of) change. How different the lighting is at different points of the day. How much magic the clouds add to everything. I just love it. And I'm so excited to get this going into year two!

This is a project I'm quite proud of. When I first started I had no clue how long I'd do it or what it'd ultimately look like. But I'm so glad I've kept up with it and am looking forward to seeing how massive this looks like a year from now!

I hope you've enjoyed this project of love just as much as I have!

#Insta_Galway Instagram Contest

I've made no secret for my love of Instagram. Even in light of their recent bonehead changes to the terms of service, or whatever the proper legal term is, I'm still a fan.

And a couple of months ago, two guys I was following (who live in Ireland) announced that they were hosting a new contest. They encouraged everyone to Follow @Insta_Galway and to tag five of your best photos to the #insta_galway tag on Instagram.

The rules were very simple:

  1. Your Photo must be tagged by you at #insta_galway via the Instagram App.
  2. @Insta_Galway will notify you via Instagram that your photo is being considered.
  3. Only then you will be requested to email us your original camera role edit to instagalway@gmail.com
  4. Photos not tagged / approved by us will not be accepted so don't email us directly!!!
  5. Only a maximum of 5 shots per entrant
  6. Absolutely no images taken using a DSLR will be accepted (trust me we'll know)!! Iphone / Android devices with the Instagram App only.
  7. No images from the net will be accepted either.
  8. The most important rule,  - Have Fun !!!

I found out that through the thousands of photos submitted, one of mine was selected! Even cooler, the photos were going to be posted at a coffee shop in Galway and my friend Robin, who lives there, stopped by to take some photos which you can see below.

There was an opening night reception in November, which I obviously missed, but what an honor to have my photograph chosen and to be among so many respected and talented photographers I follow on Instagram.

This is a photo of the Middle Path at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. I took this during a super fun and memorable visit to see one of my most favorite people, Molly Hobbs!

I'm going back to Ireland tomorrow and hope to see it for myself and meet the fantastic lads who put this on. A huge thank you to Robin for taking photos for me!

Ireland Part 2- Day 3 Kilkenny to Dublin via Gorey

Today was one of those days that will stay with me for quite some time- one that makes me happy that I'm the type of person that I am. Which may seem like a weird thing to say. But especially in light of the upcoming election, my experience today has reinforced my choice to put my energy towards making personal connections as opposed to knowing the ins and outs of the American political system or being up to date on everything going on in the news. I often feel like I'm living in a bubble and that I'm very cut off from current/real world events. But let's face it, between my husband, my twin and my mom, they've got it more than covered in my family.

A lot of you know that I'm big into Instagram. It's been a huge creative outlet for me and it's been a welcoming and fun community. I've managed to write about it for work and I've said on multiple occasions that by the time I wake up and scroll through my IG feed, I feel like I've already been on a trip around the world.

I have purposely followed a handful of talented photographers in Ireland. Because when I long to be there, Instagram gives me the opportunity to feel like I am simply by looking at the amazing photos that some of my IG friends post. So when I was putting the finishing touches on our trip together just a week or so before I actually got on the plane, I used the comment feed of someone who has provided me with some IGspiration to arrange for an IG meet-up. And I'm *so* glad that I did.

But before we could get to the meet-up, we had a little bit of exploring to do in/near Kilkenny.

Our day was a little stressful because we were of course running behind- the theme of the trip. We got up and had a wonderful breakfast (if you're planning a visit to Ireland and want to go to Kilkenny, I absolutely recommend staying at the Newlands Lodge) and then on the recommendation of our hosts, took off in the opposite direction of town to check out the Kells Priory.

We didn't know exactly what to expect, but it was pretty cool! The sheep roam the grounds freely so you can get up and close and personal with them while you walk around and explore the massive grounds of the Priory. There's obviously a lot of history that I know nothing about (note to self: read about Kells Priory so you don't sounds like an ignorant ass), but Katie and I were grateful to check this out before heading into Kilkenny.

We got some exceptional photos that was made relatively easy because the backdrop was practically perfect:

From there we stopped into Kilkenny to check out the house and pub my dad frequented:

And then we took off for Gorey where we were meeting up with FT at the Seafield Golf & Spa. We connected briefly to hug and then took off for FT's house. Thankfully we were following her, otherwise we never would have ended up in the same place. And thankfully Katie and I stopped laughing long enough for her to get our obnoxious blue car up the driveway without rolling backwards or tearing up the driveway.

We got to her very sweet house, high on a hill (Tara Hill to be exact), met her equally lovely husband and then took off on the walk I'd been dreaming of for months and following on Instagram for even longer. Having spent the better part of nearly three weeks stirring Guinness with french fries, it was immediately evident just how out of shape I had gotten. Even though I had high hopes and lovely intentions of working out regularly on my trip, this walk was the first real bit of activity I had done since the day I landed in Ireland.

But we spent a lovely couple of hours walking in the woods behind FT's house, learning about one another and, surprisingly, catching up like old friends. It's this crazy thing, you know? Before this trip I knew very little about FT. But one of the magical things about Instagram is that you get to learn a lot about people through the photos they post. And I knew it was a perfectly reasonable choice to meet up with someone I've never met and go on a walk in the woods in a place I know nothing about. I mean, I guess it's part of the magicalness that is Ireland too. (Yes, I know that's not a real word). You can feel comfortable meeting up with a perfect stranger and know that it's a safe bet.

Although the walk was kinda strenuous (I already admitted to being severely out of shape), it was perfect in every way possible. The burning of my lungs actually felt great. The chill in the air was comforting (especially since we've been experiencing insanely unusually warm weather in Santa Monica). I loved walking around the woods and following the path that FT and her husband walk frequently, admiring just how beautiful it was to see the Irish Sea and the patchwork green fields all around us.

The easy conversation between all four of us was just icing on the cake on an already perfect afternoon. And it was my favorite part of the visit. The conversation really did flow freely easily. And when we got back to FT's house, we warmed up by the fire with coffee and tea and more chatting while we watched the sunlight move in a million different directions and make the warmth inside the house even more evident than was already present.

Katie and I both felt like we met lifelong friends and even though I'd miss out on Katie and FT's visit in Dublin the next day (they arranged it at some point during the walk), I knew that our friendship would last well beyond our magical day walking along Tara Hill.

I didn't want to say goodbye after our cup of tea, but we had to get back to Dublin because I have a flight to catch tomorrow. See below for the beautiful photos of our afternoon walk with FT and her husband. And pay special attention to the very last one because this is the samephotodifferentday IG series that I've been inspired by and that I feel so grateful to be a part of!

Thank you FT!

Cool Capture: Doggy Daycare

After a massive stair walk on 8/19, Clancy took a well deserved rest after walking in the door and drinking some water. And last night, while scrolling through GeekSugar, I saw that the photo below was featured:

Cool Capture: Happy Trails

Just over a week ago, I wrote about Cool Capture for the first time when I discovered that an Instagram photo of mine had been chosen for GeekSugar's Cool Capture photo community and posted on Twitter and their website.

Once was cool enough.

But today while sitting in traffic heading home (I wasn't driving- I swear!), I was looking through GeekSugar again and found another photo of mine selected for Cool Capture
I took this picture on a Friday evening hike with The Twin. It's one of her favorite places in LA and somewhere she's been trying to get me to go to for years. Honestly. We skipped spin class last Friday and chose instead to enjoy the outdoors with Clancy. What you see off in the horizon is the Pacific Ocean. and the up and down and rolling of the trail is exactly what the rest of the trail was like. We hiked for an hour and a half and when we came back, you couldn't even see the ocean because it was covered in a blanket of clouds.

If you're an Instagram user, don't forget to use the hashtag #coolcapture and you may find one of your photos featured as well! As much as I wish they'd give you a heads up that they're going to feature one of your photos, it's been a fun and expected surprise both times I've come across my photo.

Cool Capture: Beach Days

One of the apps I have on my iPhone is for PopSugar, which is not just a celebrity gossip site, but the mobile version acts as a main portal into a bunch of their other sister sites, like GeekSugar. Sometimes when I can't sleep and I have my iPhone in bed, I'll look through some of these different sites.

Months and months ago I learned about Cool Capture, which is described on their site as "Show off your photography skills with our community. Tell us a little bit about your subject, the kind of camera you used, and any fun details or editing techniques you tried. Your photos could even be seen on the front page of GeekSugar!

Since then, I've been tagging my Instagram photos with the #coolcapture hashtag and last night while willing myself to fall asleep, I saw a photo that looked familiar. It took a minute before I realized that it was my photo taken of the Santa Monica Pier a few weeks ago. The photos is below and the link to the highlight can be found here
